Inspiration: Cultural Innovators: Bjork and Gil Scott-Heron

I’m always interested in artists who are and were always ahead of their time in their creations. Bjork and Gil Scott-Heron both fit the bill.

Check out the science behind Bjorks live performances of her latest album ‘Biophilia’: Droppin’ Musical Science.

Gil Scott-Heron: A feature on one who brought poetry and musical collaboration to the forefront.

Great interview with Pianist Vijay Iyer

A trio I was in last year performed a version of Vijay Iyers’ cover of M.I.A’s hit “Galang”. We had such a blast learning and performing that tune and I did a ton of listening to Vijay as I was working on it. Here’s an amazing interview with him: http://www.nbcnewyork.com/blogs/nonstop-sound/Vijay-Iyer-Winter-Jazz-Festival-Le-Poisson-Rouge-137286353.html

Happy New Year / Upcoming Gigs / Music!

Happy New Year! I hope 2012 finds everyone rested and refreshed! After a short rest in Phoenix visiting family and playing one of my favorite gigs (percussion on a church gig I’ve held for five years, they have been nice enough to hire me back when I visit for the holidays!), I’m ready to be back in New York and get moving!

Upcoming Gigs: Drum Set Duo with percussionist Jane Boxall Allen, April 1st, Details TBA.

Music I’m excited to see: This Saturday January 7th, I’m so excited to check out some of my favorite percussionists in the business: Allison Miller, LaFrae Sci and Jane Boxall Allen do their thing with their various jazz, blues and fusion groups, along with a solo performance on marimba by Jane. I’ll be at Pianos this Saturday evening to check it out, come join me if you’re in the area! Details: http://www.pianosnyc.com/showroom/alisong-management-llc-showcase-172012

New Video: Drumming in Contact: A Multi-Media Performance Piece!

This summer at Real Fine Arts Gallery in New York City, I had the pleasure to be a part of a multi-media performance piece commissoned by Jee Young Sim entitled “Contact”. The piece was composed for three drummers and performed with the three of us performing on the walls of the gallery that had been prepared with contact mics connected to a loop pedal. Jee manipulated the specific sounds coming out of the pedal board as David Noriega, Dave Choi and myself drummed on the walls. Click on the video tab on the page to view the performance!
